Fizzle fazzle, done

COP15_Day10_33

I thought yesterday would be reminiscent of WTO, I was a bit wrong. Protesters attempted to take over the Bella Center and hold a people’s summit. However, those super efficient Danish police swung their batons and sprayed their pepper and all was calm again! It was quite the rush being pinned between weapon wielding police officers and screaming protesters with nothing to lose. Here are selects. Click on for more. All images available via ZUMA Press. Poor execution and more dogs

COP15_Day7_06

COP15_Day8_11

Here are images from the past two days of protests. It’s funny how efficient the police are and how the protesters efforts seem to fizzle. The first image was a demonstration that targeted the harbor of Copenhagen that was broken up by police before demonstrators could get to their destination. Our second photographer, Chris Crow, was detained and then released three and half hours later.

The second image, taken yesterday, shows protesters destroying and dragging a balloon that was installed in front of parliament. The police didn’t seem to care that they were doing this. The inflatable sphere was used to represent one ton of CO2 (pro-climate). It’s like teepeeing your own house. Both protests ranged from 500 to 600. Well sorry for the brief writeup, I have to go.  click on for more.

First taste of protests

MMalijan_COP15_

Yesterday, we covered the “Don’t buy the lie” protest in downtown Copenhagen. It was a good warm up for today, which projects about 40,000 protesters. It was amazing to see the power of mobs and the sudden shift of police intensity. Here are my select photos of the day and accompanying story. Running with the demonstrators through downtown Copenhagen made me feel like I was in a zombie movie. Click on for more. These images and more available through ZUMA Press. (more…)

U.N. Climate Change Conference: Klimaforum09

MarkMalijan_COP15_

We covered Klimaforum09, known as the people’s summit, at the DGI-byen center in Copenhagen. It was refreshing to see so many organizations getting together for the cause. From the article:

“In them, activists are trying to focus public attention on issues receiving insufficient attention among negotiators, observers and journalists inside the climate talks at Copenhagen’s Bella Center.”

Here are few selects from the forum and art from the evening at the Bella Center. Click on for more.

U.N. Climate Change Conference: Day 1

MarkMalijan_ClimateConference_

Here are my selects from day one at the conference. It was a nice slow intro into the conference, but we received some bad news. It has taken us some time to adjust to the culture, directions, work-flow and production issues. My brain is mush from jet lag, while cooking I used coconut flakes instead of cornstarch. I’m going to bed. Sorry. Click on for more.

All photos and additional ones are syndicated through ZUMA Press.

Off to Copenhagen

SeaTacTerminal_01

I’m about to board the plane to Copenhagen and I’m filled with a sense of excitement and nervousness. Mostly nervousness. I have no idea what will happen when I’m there. That’s the best part though, right? So many questions are flying through my head. I hope to answer at least a few of them in the weeks to come. Gotta go now, but I will update once we are established at our host house. Thank you for all the support!
