Death Cab for Cutie

DeathCab_17DeathCab_08 Death Cab for Cutie played a Western student exclusive show at Mount Baker Theatre last week. I was asked to photograph the show for the school. Overall an amazing show, despite the incompetent staff at Mount Baker Theatre. Seriously, if you are going to give out press passes then they should have some authority as to where you can go. I had four different tickets to let me in and out of particular areas, painful to say the least. Always be early. End rant. Click on for more. (more…)

CSD Art Project

Last week I photographed an art project by Western’s Communication & Sciences Disorders department. Faculty, students and patients gathered to commemorate and decorate their new Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic in the Academic Instructional Center at Western. Click on for still images. (more…)

SportsShooter feature

SSAVI

Today I am featured on SportsShooter’s front page for my work at SportsShooter Academy VI. It was a great experience and I’m honored to be featured. I highly recommend the academy to anyone who is remotely interested. You get out what you put in.

Home again

SSAVI_Sat_Malijan_03SSAVI_Sat_Malijan_02

Just got back home for SSAVI. It was a great experience. I learned alot about myself as a photographer. The last day we shot horce racing. I never been to a race track and it was huge! I mobbed around the track with fellow shooters David Kasnic and Rod Leland. We approached the day to try and shoot features. There are so many different kinds of people and areas to explore. It is rich with character. I made it to the top 3 photos for  the day with first racing image. Click on for more (more…)

Day 2

Yesterday I photographed track at Orange Coast College. I didn’t do as bad as I thought yesterday. My close-up of the wrestler made it into the finals for picture of the day along with these first two frames. Tomorrow I will put up more. Last day of SSAVI tomorrow and it has been a challenge. Amazing to say the least. Beer and friends; embrace them both. Click on for more (more…)

First day of shooting

These are the photos I shot today at SSAVI. We got to photograph John Drake a wrestler at Cal State. I had a hard time conceptualizing what I wanted to do. Hopefully I’ll have better luck tomorrow at the track meet. It’s late and I sucked  today so I’m not writing anymore. (more…)

Irvine

I just got into Irvine for SSAVI. The first session is about to start and there are plenty of amazing shooters here. I will be posting what I can when I can in the next couple of days.

Tattoo removal

I covered tattoo removal in Olympia for a Klipsun story last month. A program called Ink Out focused on gang related tattoo removal. The program worked mainly with teenagers and young adults looking to change their lives. I met Aurora Ortiz a young teenage girl looking to remove a South Siders tattoo on her forearm.

Hoopin

I am currently doing an internship with Western’s University of Communications as a campus photographer. We finally had some nice weather and I found a hula-hooper down at the park. A great past time long forgotten,  I’m pretty sure it’s making a comeback.

A Savage time

I went on a date to watch Dan Savage, of The Stranger, speak on Western’s campus last night. He is an interesting individual, hilarious and insightful. I highly suggest to read his sex advice column Strange Love. Here are a few frames I fired from my seat (yeah I’m a good date).

Dream assignment

Serge Giachetti

My friend and amazing photojournalist Serge Giachetti is pursuing a photography grant through nameyourdreamassignment.com

“I’m writing to ask your help in winning a $50,000 photography grant to continue my project documenting native american youth: their adolescent struggles for independence as well as their participation in old tribal ways. I’d like to go beyond the typical media stereotypes of life on the reservation by taking a grounded look at the rich cultural renaissance thats going on amongst the youth. I’ve attached a couple pictures from my project to give you an idea of what its about.” Go here to vote.
